SEO in the age of AI search
People now ask ChatGPT instead of Google. Here's how to make sure it recommends you.
For twenty years, getting found meant ranking on a page of ten blue links. That is changing. A growing number of people now ask an AI assistant a full question — "who builds registration systems for large events?" — and get a written answer that names a few businesses. The goal has shifted from ranking to being the one mentioned.
How an AI decides what to say
Roughly: it reads pages it can access, works out what each business does, and prefers sources that are clear, specific, and consistent with what the rest of the web says. It can't recommend what it can't understand. Vague slogans give it nothing to quote.
What helps
Say plainly what you do, for whom, and where. One clear sentence near the top of the page is worth more than a paragraph of atmosphere.
Answer real questions on the page. The questions customers ask on the phone — cost, timing, what is included — written out with direct answers.
Add structured data. A small block of code that labels your business name, services, and contact details in a format machines read reliably.
Keep your facts consistent. The same name, address, and phone number everywhere you are listed.
Be mentioned elsewhere. Reviews, directories, and articles by others are how any search system, old or new, decides you are real.
Make sure the page can be read. If your content only appears after heavy scripts run, or sits behind a login, many crawlers will never see it.
Write for a person in a hurry. It turns out that is also how you write for a machine.
What has not changed
None of this replaces ordinary search. Google still sends most businesses most of their visitors, and the same habits serve both: a fast site, clear writing, and honest, specific information.
An honest caveat
Nobody can guarantee that an AI assistant will recommend you — these systems change often and don't publish their rules. Anyone promising a guaranteed placement is selling something else. What you can do is make your business easy to understand and easy to trust, and that pays off wherever people look.
