Why site speed is costing you customers

Every extra second of load time sends buyers away. What causes slowness, and how it's fixed.

People decide quickly. If a page is still blank after a few seconds, many visitors go back and choose the next result — and you never find out they were there. Speed is not a technical nicety; it is part of how you treat a customer at the door.

Why it matters more on phones

Most visits now happen on a phone, often on a weak connection. A page that feels fine on office Wi-Fi can take several times longer in a car park or a rural area. Search engines also take page experience into account when ranking results, so a slow site can be harder to find in the first place.

The usual causes

Oversized images. The most common culprit by far: a photo straight from a camera, many times larger than the screen it is shown on.

Too many add-ons. Chat widgets, trackers, pop-ups, and plug-ins each load their own code. Ten small additions make one slow page.

Cheap or distant hosting. A crowded server, or one on the other side of the world from your customers, adds delay to every click.

Heavy page builders. Some templates ship far more code than the page needs.

Nothing is cached. The server rebuilds the same page for every visitor instead of keeping a ready copy.

A fast site is rarely the result of one clever trick. It is the result of not carrying things you don't need.

How it gets fixed

Resize and compress images, and load the ones further down the page only when they are needed. Remove add-ons nobody uses. Serve files from locations near your visitors. Keep ready-made copies of pages that don't change. None of this alters how the site looks; it changes how quickly it arrives.

Check yours in two minutes

Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool will test any address and list what is slowing it down. Then do the honest test: open your site on your phone, on mobile data, away from the office. What you feel in those few seconds is what your customers feel.
